Ironically, this fast growing perennial vine is neither southern nor jasmine. It is actually native to China and is known scientifically as Trachelospermum jasminoides or star jasmine – other common names include trader’s compass. Blooming between early spring and summer, the Confederate Jasmine produces small clusters of highly fragrant white flowers that resemble the pinwheels of childhood. Reaching vine heights up to 20 feet with support, the Confederate Jasmine prefers fertile well-drained soil with full sun to part shade exposure. This evergreen belongs to the Apocynaceae family, and is often utilized as a shrub or ground cover in addition to a vining privacy screen.
