Wild Lime (Zanthoxylum fagara)
Family: Rutaceae
Subfamily: Toddalioideae
Plant type: tree
Native to Florida
The wild lime, also known as lime prickly ash, Colima, correosa, uña degato, and cat’s claw, is a small to medium tree growing between 10 to 20 feet in height. Highly drought tolerant, the wild lime, which can also be grown as a shrub, prefers full sun, and moist, well-drained sandy or limestone soils. Growing all year, with its peak between winter and summer, the wild lime produces fragrant greenish-yellow flowers along with a small fruit. The wild lime serves as a larval host plant for the giant and Schaus’ Swallowtail butterflies.
